Beneath the Surface: The Soul of Charcoal
What do we truly see when we look at the world around us? How does the play of light and shadow, form and void, shape our understanding of reality? Mahalakshmi Kannappan practice is not merely a manipulation of mediums but a deep conversation with the elemental forces that define reality - a dialogue that questions, disrupts, and ultimately reconstructs the way we perceive the world. In this exhibition, Kannappan pushes the envelope of what art can be, in a space that blends or surpasses traditional boundaries, where material becomes a reflection of the complicated relationship between form, substance, and the unseen forces that shape existence.
Charcoal, often perceived as a simple drawing material, becomes, in her hands - elevated and charged to its full potential. Her works are more than visual experiences; they are art that feels alive and infused with primal forces of nature that delve into the philosophical notion of materiality as a living, breathing entity....

Mark Justiniani's “Births and Reverbs” transcends the boundaries of time, possession, and the infinite.✨ This captivating piece is a dual exploration of two concepts, each reflecting humanity's quest for understanding.
On one side, a glowing wall of crystals frames a suspended lump of carbon, poised at the edge of eternity.💎 This elemental form embodies transformation – hinting at its potential to become a diamond or a precursor to life itself, suspended in the vastness of time.
Turning to the other face, a woman with mechanical wings 🦋 stands amid an array of artifacts that represent humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and mastery over nature. From abacus beads to clock pendulums, ⏳ these objects reflect our attempts to capture the fleeting moments of existence, reminding us of the brevity of our presence in the grand tapestry of creation.
As the pendulums swing, they momentarily synchronize, echoing the ephemeral nature of order in our chaotic reality. Through Births and Reverbs, Justiniani prompts us to reflect: in the grand scheme of the universe, what do we truly possess?
Crafted in collaboration with Yogya Art Lab,🛠️ this work showcases innovative materials and design, ensuring its longevity and continued dialogue with viewers.
